SelfCare – International Collaboration to Strengthen Health and Self-Care in Rural Areas

From May 6–8, the SelfCare project team gathered in Saxnäs, southern Lapland, Sweden. The group includes representatives from Veltek, the University of Akureyri (HA), and the municipality of Fjallabyggð in Iceland, the University of Limerick in Ireland as well as Region Västerbotten – Centre for Rural Medicine in Sweden.

The visit was both educational and impactful. The group gained unique insight into the life and culture of the Sámi people, as well as the challenges the Sámi community faces in accessing welfare services. Discussions also focused on opportunities to strengthen dialogue and interaction with service providers and improve services for residents in the region.

The time spent in Saxnäs was an important part of the collaboration, highlighting the importance of cultural understanding and mutual respect in the development of sustainable and user-centered services. The project benefits from a dedicated and ambitious group of participants who are working systematically to develop solutions that support self-care and well-being in sparsely populated areas.
