Veltek is a collaborative platform focused on the development of health and welfare services in Northern Iceland, bringing together public authorities, municipalities, and private stakeholders. The partnership explores how new technological solutions, increased collaboration, and integrated services can improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of services for residents, particularly in rural and remote areas.
HSN one of the active partners within the Veltek network has recently received a grant of ISK 2.5 million from the Ministry of Health to purchase specialised equipment that enables regular diabetic eye screening to be carried out locally. With the introduction of the RetinaRisk screening system, individuals with diabetes will no longer need to travel to Reykjavík for this essential service, representing a significant improvement in access to care for people living in rural communities.
From Veltek’s perspective, this funding highlights how targeted investment in welfare and health technology can deliver tangible benefits for rural healthcare. Solutions such as advanced eye-screening equipment, psychological services delivered via video consultations, and other digital health tools allow residents in remote areas to access specialist care without long and costly travel. These services contribute to improved quality of life and support greater independence for individuals.
Earlier this year, additional funding was awarded for the implementation of the Memaxi system in Northwest Iceland. The system connects service users, families, and healthcare professionals, supporting improved communication, increased safety, and more active user participation. Approximately 70 digital medication dispensers are currently in use within home nursing services and at several primary healthcare centres in the region, contributing to increased safety and improved quality of life for service users.
Veltek views these developments as clear examples of how collaboration, innovation, and the effective use of technology can strengthen health and welfare services in rural areas, delivering real value for both residents and professionals.
